Dean's, President's Lists Students Named for UA Spring 2019 Term
A total of 11,406 students enrolled during the 2019 spring term at The University of Alabama were named to the Dean's List with an academic record of 3.5 or above or the President's List with an academic record of 4.0 (all A's). The UA Dean's and President's lists recognize full-time undergraduate students. The lists do not apply to graduate students or to undergraduate students who take less than a full course load.

Miami University Student-Athletes Named to All-MAC Second Team
The Mid-American Conference announced its softball All-Conference Teams. Kara Leckinger, Johniann Wahl, Lily Wilmot and Ashton Slone were named All-MAC Second Team. Leckinger hit .383 in conference games this season, the second-highest on the Miami roster. She was also second on the team in hits (23), RBI (14) and on-base percentage (.441) in MAC play. Leckinger hit .308 overall this season, setting career-highs in games played (40), games started (35), at-bats (104), hits (32), doubles (5), RBI (19), walks (3) and hit-by-pitches (10). She has nine multi-hit games this season, two of which she had three hits, and three multi-RBI games this season. Wahl became the program leader in three more career categories this season, climbing to the top of the ranks in RBI (132), doubles (42) and walks (104) after setting the record for home runs last season as a junior. Wahl is also in Miami's career top-10 in hits (176) and at-bats (607) as she's started 206 of 207 games during her Miami career. In conference play this season, she is batting .324, has 22 hits, five doubles, 12 RBI and a slugging percentage of .441. Wahl has 11 multi-hit games this season including two three-hit games. Wilmot leads the Miami offense in conference play in home runs (6) and RBI (21) and is second on the team in total bases (38), slugging percentage (.623). She is second in the MAC in RBI and home runs (6) in conference games. Wilmot is also 10th in the conference in slugging percentage in MAC games. Overall this season, Wilmot is second in home runs (8), second in RBI (31), tied for second on the team in doubles (9) and third in slugging percentage (.562). Her eight home runs this season is tied for the ninth-most in a single season in program history. Slone leads the Miami offense this season in batting average (.382), doubles (16), RBI (36), total bases (86), slugging percentage (.632), walks (26) and on-base percentage (.485). In conference play, she batted .359 and led the team in doubles (9), walks (12) and on-base percentage (.461) and was second in hits (23), RBI (14) and total bases (38). Slone's 16 doubles ties for the fourth-most doubles in a single season in program history while her 36 RBI is 10th in single-season RBI and her 26 walks ties for ninth in a single season in program history. She's in the top-10 in the MAC in six offensive categories.

UA Engineering Seniors Win Second Consecutive IEEE Robotic Competition
For the second consecutive year, a senior robotics team from The University of Alabama took home a win at an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers regional conference. Brandon Quinn, Julia Lanier, Trent Whalen, Katie McCray and David Weil, senior computer engineering students, competed at IEEE SoutheastCon 2019 in Huntsville. Six senior computer engineering students won the Student Hardware Competition at IEEE SoutheastCon 2019 in Huntsville. Dr. Ken Ricks, faculty adviser and associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, doesn't think any school has ever won twice in a row.

Miami University Student-Athletes Earn MAC Commissioner's Award
Five members of Miami University's softball team have earned the MAC Commissioner's Award. MAC Commissioner's Award is awarded to those student-athletes who have achieved a minimum of a 3.5 cumulative GPA at the end of two semesters or three quarters. First year and graduating seniors are not eligible for this award. Transfer student-athletes may complete one full academic year prior to be eligible.

More than 5,700 students at the University of Iowa were named to the UI's Dean's List for the spring 2019 semester. Undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the College of Engineering, and the Tippie College of Business who achieve a grade point average of 3.50 or higher on 12 semester hours or more of UI graded course work during a given semester or summer session and who have no semester hours of "I" (incomplete) or "O" (no grade reported) during the same semester are recognized by inclusion on the Dean's List for that semester. Undergraduate students in the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine may qualify for the Dean's List with fewer than 12 semester hours of graded credit if deemed appropriate by the college. College of Nursing students participating in clinical courses must have a total of 12 semester hours of earned credit, with eight semester hours of graded credit with a grade point average of 3.50 or higher.

University of Iowa celebrates 2019 spring graduates
More than 4,800 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students at the University of Iowa recently participated in graduation ceremonies. The UI's spring 2019 graduates had an average cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 3.16 on a 4.0 scale. In addition, 16 percent of the graduating class graduated with multiple majors and 355 undergraduates graduated with honors. Miami University Student-Athletes Named Academic All-MAC
The Mid-American Conference announced the 2019 softball Academic All-MAC team on Tuesday. Miami had eight athletes named to the Academic All-MAC team. The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. Among the eight RedHawk selections are five All-MAC selections, an All-Region selection, seven player of the week selections and four Miami Female Athlete selections.

UI students help get kids moving to reduce childhood obesity
More than 100 Iowa City-area elementary school students participated in Healthy LifeStars, an initiative from the University of Iowa College of Public Health staffed by current UI students that fights childhood obesity by encouraging students to be more active and eat more nutritious food. Childhood obesity has become a serious public health issue in the U.S., as more and more children are classified as significantly overweight. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says the number of obese children in the United States between the ages of 6 and 19 has tripled since the 1970s, rising to 20% in 2015. In Iowa, about 18% of children between the ages of 10 and 17 are obese, according to 2018 data from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Spring Theatre Production: West Side Story
Sixty students participated in the Spring Theatre production of West Side Story, directed by Professor of Theatre Mark Cryer. A cast of 26 students participated in the Spring Theatre production of West Side Story, directed by Professor of Theatre Mark Cryer. A live orchestra, featuring 30 students and conducted by Heather Buchman, accompanied the performance. The classic American musical received an update with the Theatre Department's production. Set in 2018 Bronx, New York, five months after hurricane Maria, the timeless musical tells a story of love, of otherness and street gangs. West Side Story was presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International.

Students bring 'Marisol' to the stage at Baldwin Wallace University
Under the direction of assistant professor Anjanette Hall and three student assistant directors, BW students staged Jose Rivera's apocalyptic play about guardian angels enlisting the aid of New York City homeless people in a battle to save the universe from a God who has lost his mind.

Alternative Spring Break
Thirty-six students participated in Hamilton's 26th annual Alternative Spring Break. Participants traveled to Rockbridge, Va., Goldsboro-Wayne, N.C., and Marion County, S.C., to work on Habitat for Humanity projects, and to Baltimore to work with youth. Alternative Spring Break is aimed at increasing students' awareness and concern of social issues while generating a life-long interest in community service.

UI students raise almost $3 million in 25th annual UI Dance Marathon
More than 1,700 current University of Iowa students recently collaborated to raise almost $3 million in financial support for the UI Stead Family Children's Hospital as participants in the 25th annual UI Dance Marathon. During the event Feb. 1-2 at the Iowa Memorial Union, student participants unveiled the total of $2,960,403.25, which supports pediatric oncology patients and their families at the hospital and advances cancer research. In addition to raising money, the event celebrates the lives of survivors and recognizes those lost. Dance Marathon is the UI's largest student organization. It has raised almost $28 million since its first event in 1995.
